Fissure sealants

Fissure sealants are a preventive dental treatment used to protect the deep grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of teeth from plaque and bacteria. These areas can be difficult to clean effectively with regular brushing, making them more susceptible to tooth decay, particularly in children and teenagers.

During the treatment, a thin protective material is applied to the grooves of the tooth and bonded to the enamel. The sealant creates a smooth barrier that helps prevent food particles and bacteria from becoming trapped in areas that are difficult to reach. At Medrose Medical Center, fissure sealants are applied with careful attention to the condition of the tooth.

When Might You Need Fissure Sealants?

Fissure sealants may be recommended for:

* Children and teenagers with deep or pronounced tooth grooves
* Newly erupted permanent molars
* Teeth that are difficult to clean effectively
* Individuals who are more prone to tooth decay
* Teeth with early signs of susceptibility to decay, when appropriate

 What Does the Treatment Involve?

1. Examination
The tooth is examined to make sure the grooves are suitable for sealing and that there are no existing cavities requiring other treatment.

2. Cleaning the Tooth
The tooth surface is carefully cleaned to remove plaque and food debris before the sealant is applied.

3. Applying the Sealant
A thin layer of sealant is placed into the grooves and pits of the tooth, flowing into the areas that are difficult to clean with a toothbrush.

4. Setting the Sealant
A curing light is used to harden the material and securely bond it to the tooth surface. The bite is then checked to ensure the sealant feels comfortable.

 Does Fissure Sealant Treatment Hurt?

Fissure sealant treatment is generally quick, simple, and painless. It does not require drilling or removal of healthy tooth structure, and local anesthesia is usually not needed. The goal of fissure sealants is to protect vulnerable tooth surfaces.
